Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born within Long Beach California. DuVernay had a close relationship with her Aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to be creative and instilled by art. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater during the day. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used as an instrument for activism. Her mother, too, was conscious of her social status and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and brought up. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights marches that were historic through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma would inspire her later to make a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she went to in the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded diplomas in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned the task of watching the family home, and then looking through the trash of one of members of the juries. After being disappointed in journalism and the jobs she was given, DuVernay was inspired to start a new career in publicity. DuVernay got a job right after graduating from college as an assistant publicist in one of the smaller studios. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched a number different lifestyle and promotional networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
